It has almost 10,000 students from 153 countries and about 2,000 academic, technical and administration staff. Its School of Informatics is a fusion of Computing and Information Sciences, and has 35 full-time academics and a larger number of support staff and contract researchers. It has strong research expertise, with over 50% of its research outputs rated as at least internationally excellent, and 15% of the outputs as world leading in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise. The Centre for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Design was founded in 1991 as a university-recognised focus of research excellence.
