INRIA is the French-wide research institute on automation and computer science and engineering. It has many strong links with the CNRS French fundamental research institute, and also with universities around the country. INRIA people participating in the project belong to respectively the OASIS team at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis Méditerranée, and the SARDES team from INRIA Rhône-Alpes in Grenoble. Both INRIA research centers, and in particular, those two teams, are joint teams, connected to the CNRS French research institute (respectively, I3S and LIG laboratories), and corresponding universities (respectively University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, and Grenoble‘s Universities). With more than 30 people in each, those two teams are very active in distributed and parallel programming, large-scale distributed systems like grids, peer-to-peer networks. The ProActive parallel programming suite is the flagship of the OASIS team: it is both a high-level parallel and distributed object-oriented Java library, and a runtime environment that constitutes a high-level middleware for elastic resource acquisition, deploying and monitoring applications on large-scale networked infrastructures (intranet or Internet computing clusters, grids and clouds). ProActive also includes an implementation of a software component model (GCM: Grid Component Model, now an ETSI standard from the Grid Technical Committee) that constitutes a grid-aware extension of the Fractal software component model. Fractal was initially devised by the SARDES team and OrangeLabs teams in Grenoble. It is a very successful, because very flexible, software component model, whose usage has spread around in various areas such as networks, operating systems, embedded systems, and in software engineering domains like SOA and OSGi based applications. Fractal is the core technology used in EBM PEtALS ESB. Fractal, as ProActive and PEtALS are delivered as open source technologies under the OW2 banner.
